Ship Safe Training Group

SSTG has provided an entry route for Deck, Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets wanting to start a career at sea in the Merchant Navy for over 40 years. We organise and supervise cadet training programmes to provide high quality and progressive training and support throughout their college and sea-based phases.

SSTG provides sponsorship for cadets to take up their career at sea. This provides for financial support whilst training at college and at sea.

Deck Cadet Training

Your first step to becoming a Deck Officer (sometimes referred to as a Navigation Officer) is to complete a 3 year Deck Cadet Training programme. You will study at one of the specialist UK nautical colleges and your shore-based studies will be interspersed with the completion of sea service.

A Qualified Deck Officer is responsible for:

  • Safety of vessel, crew, passengers and cargo;
  • Vessel navigation;
  • Maintaining strict schedules;
  • Cargo operations in port;
  • Vessel stability;
  • Security.

Engineer Cadet Training

Your first step to becoming an Engineer Officer is to complete a three-year Engineer Cadet Training programme. Studying at one of the specialist UK nautical colleges and your shore based studies will be interspersed with the completion of sea service.

Once qualified the Engineer Officer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the main engine and all of the ships ancillary mechanical systems. Traditionally a Ship’s engineer would have maintained watches 24/7, but today it is more likely that the engine room will be unmanned with the duty Engineer responsible for responding to alarms, day or night.

Electro-Technical Cadet Training

Your first step to becoming an Electro-Technical Officer is to complete a 3 year ETO Cadet Training programme. You will study at one of the specialist UK nautical colleges and your shore-based studies will be interspersed with the completion of sea service.

Range of training programmes at HND and Foundation Degree levels.
Study for academic qualifications in Marine Electronic Engineering (or similar subject).
